Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question that you do not see here please call 808-652-3907

Where do I meet for my charter?

Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor slip 201. 2494 Niumalu Rd. Lihue HI 96766

What methods of fishing will we be using?

Kauai offers many different types of fishing year round. At Imua Fishing Charters Kauai we will always use the most productive fishing methods that are conducive to the time of year and weather patterns for that particular day. Whether it be trolling for pelagic species or bottom fishing for reef predators, our captain will use his knowledge and many years of experience to put you on the fish.

If you are interested in catching a specific type of fish, or using a specific method of fishing, we encourage you to book a private charter. This will give you the freedom to customize your charter experience.

On shared charters the captain will decide on the most productive method of fishing to suit the group as a whole.

How many people are on a shared charter?

We only allow 4 anglers on shared trips. This will give you the best chances for a fish while enjoying an uncrowded boat. Our boat is coast guard certified to take up to 6 passengers. Most of the charter boats on kauai will allow up to 6 passengers on shared boats.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel your charter we ask that you give us 48 hours notice. This will allow us to try and fill your spot with another customer. Cancellations within 48 hours that we are unable to fill will be charged for the trip. Cancellations based on weather will be 100% refundable and we will do our best to reschedule your trip for a future date.

What should I bring with me on the boat?

We recommend bringing a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, jacket, towel, and any snacks or meals you would like to enjoy during the charter. Waters and soft drinks will be provided. Alcohol is allowed but we ask that you drink in moderation. Please no glass bottles.

What if I’m prone to sea sickness?

Many of the over the counter medications such as Dramamine or Bonine are effective at minimizing the effects of sea sickness when taken prior to getting on the boat as they are preventative measures.

There are also stronger and more effective prescription medications and patches that I have seen to work very will with past customers. If you know you will get sea sick, try and reach out to your doctor to see if they will prescribe you with these more effective options.

We understand that sea sickness can be very uncomfortable, and if you have booked a private charter you can always ask the captain to return to port if you feel necessary. On shared charters we do not have that flexibility unless the remainder of the group decides to end the trip.

What is the fish policy?

We understand that eating and enjoying your fresh catch is a great way to celebrate your fishing experience. We will cut and provide each paying angler with enough fish for a few meals to enjoy on your vacation. The fish we catch have a very short shelf life of 3 days before getting fishy and unpalatable. In addition, we do not recommend freezing any of the fish we catch as it does not preserve well when being frozen in traditional freezers.

Any fish caught over 50lbs will not be cut and will be sold to our local markets whole. At the end of the day the captain will make the call on what fish gets cut. Any extra fish left on the boat will always have a good home and nothing will get wasted. It is our kuleana (responsibility) as stewards of the sea do give back to our community and elders who are unable to fish for themselves.

We will often donate fish to (ohana) families, (kupuna) elders, or local charities needing fish for personal consumption or celebrations. As always our top priority is customer satisfaction and we will do everything we can to assure everyone leaves the boat happy.

When should I book my charter?

It is always recommended to book a charter as soon as you know you want to go fishing. Activities on Kauai can book up quickly during busy seasons, and booking early will guarantee you a spot on our boat.

What if I have a medical condition or a disability?

Guests who are pregnant or have back problems should check with their doctors prior to going on a fishing boat. If you have any questions or concerns you would like to discuss with your captain please do not hesitate to call.

We do not discriminate in any way and encourage people with disabilities to contact us to best understand your needs and how we can accommodate them.

Does your boat have a restroom?

Yes. Our boat has a fully enclosed bathroom with AC.

Can I mount my fish?

Yes you can mount any species of fish we catch. Mounting your fish can be a great way to preserve your memory of your fishing experience. With our connections in the industry we can provide you with a quality mount that you can have and enjoy for generations. Please inquire with the captain during your fishing charter if you wish to mount a fish and we can give you a price based on the size and species of the fish.
